A Familiar Feeling
structure inspired by W.S. Merwin
Fingers crossed
through calloused
palms through
empty fields
of tans and browns
an endless mirage
a recurring phenomenon
I feel like I know you
Teary eyed
and criticized no
matter how much
I materialized
mortified
and patronized
I feel like I know you
Pins and needles
terrorize the gleeful
feet go numb
and real pain is evil
a lingering phantom
an aching anthem
I feel like I know you
you,
who cling to the weak.
you,
who bites before he speaks.
you,
who carries dreams so clean
and fills them with a dreadful
gleam.
I do know you.
