and won a Silver Key in the 2021 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

One with Youth

I smell you in the summer grass,

taste you in the salty breeze of an azure undiscovered

To be near you is to be loved;

to be heard;

to be undeniably radiant

I’ve never felt so willing to learn;

so willing to live and to cry and to trust,

And yet I see you in rain droplets

feel you in countless smooth petals

as each day feels like

an eternity of Eden-like

gardens growing amongst

every one of my heartstrings.

I hear you in the crunch of leaves

smell you in autumnal spices

with plaid scarves and mended

hearts embracing our never-ending

adoration.

I taste you in the pine trees

see you in the pale fog of a blizzard

while I inhale your peppermint breath

and exhale the warmth you create inside of me.

We are one with time; with passion;

with wild and exuberant youth

To be loved by you is to be

known by the only things that matter;

to be remembered by all the hapless attempts of love I will endure in the wake of our downfall.
